Differentiated Learning
normally Beechen Cliff School provides every pupil from Years 7-11 with a minimum of two 1-hour lessons per week of Physical Education. To distinguish between the lessons on the timetable they are termed either P.E. lessons (in which individual and/or indoor sports are normally taught), and Games lessons (in which outdoor invasion games are predominantly taught).
Physical Education Lessons-
The Physical Education Department are experienced with working with a diverse range of practical abilities. Therefore differentiated teaching within activities is essential in order to fully challenge the most able pupils, and encourage those of average abilities and below to higher levels of achievement.
During this lesson the teacher will remain the same throughout the academic year.
Games Lessons-
Games are taught to half the year group at a time. Due to the large number and the diverse range of practical abilities amongst the pupils involved at one time, the Physical Education Department divides the boys into three groups, based on sporting endeavour and sporting interest.
These groups are normally organised using the teachers’ experienced knowledge of the boys and their capabilities, or in the case of the new Year 7 pupils, their transitional progress summary that is forwarded by most of the feeder primary schools.
This therefore transpires into a top, middle and less able group. However, as each activity develops every pupil has the opportunity to move between the three groups so that they can perform along side similarly able students in all sporting activities taught. All pupils within the Year group follow the same Scheme of Work, however, some individuals or groups may work at a faster pace and/or study more extension work than others. Whilst some pupils may not study some higher level work – the group teacher will make an informed professional decision on this point.
As with the pupils, the staff also work to their capabilities, with the main specialist in a specific sport normally working with the top group. This ensures that the pupils are more likely to receive teaching that suits their level of ability. However, for this reason, a pupil may switch between all three teachers timetabled at that time throughout the academic year.
